Driving licence in Thailand

Driving licences are issued by the Department of Land Transport (DLT). Foreign residents can apply for a Thai licence at a DLT office — the map above shows where to go.

Who applies

A Thai licence is the long-term option for foreigners who live and drive in Thailand. Rules for short-term visitors, international driving permits and foreign licences are being revised, and practice can differ between offices — always confirm the current requirements with the DLT office you plan to use.

Documents to prepare

  • Application form (available at the DLT office).
  • Passport and visa — many offices require a non-immigrant visa rather than a tourist visa.
  • Proof of residence in Thailand — often a certificate of residence from Immigration or your embassy; some offices also accept other proof such as a work permit.
  • Medical certificate from a clinic or hospital (clinics near some DLT offices issue them on the spot).
  • Your foreign driving licence with a Thai or English translation, if you hold one.
  • Passport photographs and copies of your documents.
03

Step by step

  1. Choose your DLT office — usually the one serving your home address — and book through the DLT Smart Queue app where available.
  2. Get the medical certificate and gather your documents.
  3. Submit your application at the DLT office and pay the fee.
  4. Take the tests and short training: physical checks such as colour vision, depth perception and reaction, plus a short driving seminar.
  5. Receive your licence. Keep it with you whenever you drive.
